Dance Audition Resources

Finding audition opportunities during a pandemic is hard enough. Let’s make sure we have the tools to know where to start looking. Below are some audition listing websites for dancers, each with their own unique quirks. Please note that the information here is both from personal experience and research, and everyone may have a different opinion on the nature of these sites. Also, before jumping into an audition from these sites, make sure you do your own research on the company and see if it’s a good fit for you! I hope you find new insights into which platforms fit your dance audition needs best!

Dance/NYC

https://www.dance.nyc/for-artists/listings

“Artists are necessary workers” a quote straight from the top of the listing page on Dance/NYC’s website. Dance/NYC is a dance activist organization that provides resources to dance artists such as numerous grants, events, and accessible job opportunities. The type of job listings on Dance/NYC varies with opportunities ranging in all styles of dance. I find that the majority of the auditions are for concert dance jobs around the New York City area. If this is what you’re looking for, Dance/NYC is an awesome resource for dancers (I check it everyday!). It’s free and the website is easy to maneuver.

Backstage

https://www.backstage.com/casting/

Backstage is kind of an online agency where you pay a membership fee annually, but don’t need to pay them commission for each gig you book! The subscription is $150/year and is often discounted, especially for students. Subscribing allows you to see further audition details and apply directly through the website. This website is great for triple threat dancers as the auditions range widely from student films to popular Broadway musicals! Once you subscribe and upload your materials to the site it’s really easy to apply. I can go on and apply to five jobs in fifteen minutes! Of course some auditions require specific materials that you need to prepare for, but others are just a few clicks away to apply. Another factor I really like about this website is you can narrow down your search for  your own needs. For example, you can pick location, compensation range, union status, the gender of roles, age restrictions, and audition type. If you like to apply to a wide range of auditions and are hesitant on getting an agent, then this site is totally worth it and really easy to use.

Entertainers Worldwide Jobs

https://www.entertainersworldwidejobs.com/

I stumbled upon this website back in April and decided to subscribe in case anything that interested me came up. The fee is $50 your first year, then $100 recurring. The types of jobs on this site are short term commercial dance gigs, such as cruise ships, weddings, and even magician assistants! The website can get cluttered with ads and not as user friendly as others, but if these types of jobs interest you, definitely give it a look.

Dancing Opportunities

https://dancingopportunities.com/category/auditions/

Can’t wait until the borders open and you can get the heck out of the US? Then this website is for you! It is completely free to browse a multitude of mostly European dance company auditions and projects. The site is pretty straightforward and user friendly. Definitely a must see if you want to dance abroad.

Dance Hypha

https://dancehypha.com

Dance Hypha is a new audition platform aimed to connect dancers with audition opportunities worldwide. The membership is $48/year and you get access to exclusive dance opportunities. Once you sign up you create a profile with your bio, headshots, videos, etc. When a casting opportunity arises, Dance Hypha emails you and asks if you want to apply and then you submit your profile so the employers can see. Many of the casting notices are short-term film or commercial work often outside of the U.S. What I noticed is that the compensation is always really fair and the projects seem really interesting! Want to be a part of a Balenciaga campaign or international commercial? Who doesn’t, right?!

Art Jobs

https://www.artjobs.com

Art Jobs is another free audition website, yay! There is an eclectic mix of national and international auditions, open calls, and festival opportunities. Definitely another great site to browse as you make your way through your audition search.

It’s a difficult time for dancers to find opportunities that suit our artistic and financial needs, but these are some great sites to get started in your search. Wishing everyone the best of luck on their job searches, and please contact us if there are other great sites we’re missing here!
